Need harsh punishment and need actions along with promises for future safety Prolonged Silence and a statement after a long time not an answer for atrocities particularly on girl children and women Mr. Prime Minister! Promise a harsh punishment for the perpetrators. We have just heard about two heinous crimes, uncivilized and ghastly, one happened at Kashmir at Kathua another at Unnao in Uttarpradesh.
It was at Kashmir an 8 year old girl child was abducted, kept in a Hindu temple and was brutally raped every day. She was then murdered and her body was left on the street.
A woman complained to the police in Unnao in Uttarpradesh about being outraged by an MLA. The police,
who brought the lady and her father for questioning, had the father locked up. The man died while in custody. This was reported by U.P. press and then all over India.
Both these inhuman incidents have struck terror in people's hearts and minds, especially for parents of girl children. Civilized society is rudely awakened. In both these incidents, The criminals have not been arrested. The entire nation condemns these heinous crimes but our honorable prime minister has an answer only in his clever silence. This is highly condemnable.
Both these incidents remind us of the frightening Nirbhaya incident. The media, however, do not find them important enough. They also adopt the clever silence of the prime minister and the home ministry. A ritualistic mention of the incidents and then complete silence.
United Nations Organization had expressed concern that India is not a safe place for women. This was during the Nirbhaya episode. The situation is such that it threatens the safety of women repeatedly. These incidents bare India to the world. Our Indian culture stands exposed.
People in both these incidents should be arrested without delay. This must be taken seriously without giving scope for destruction or tampering of evidence. Judicial enquiry must take place and the culprits merit severest punishment. This is the demand of Samatha, women's wing of The All India People's Science Network(AIPSN). This is also the demand of the AIPSN organizations of Uttarpradesh and
Kashmir.
We also insist that the Prime minister who speaks of women's safety and women’s development, let him tell the nation of the steps that are contemplated to punish the guilty and to put an end to such atrocities, that are increasingly going unchecked due to the government's silence and inaction.
N. Prabha, SAMATHA coordinator, AIPSN
